Perched on the forty seventh floor of a high rise in the heart of Mumbai, is a lavish yet rooted home for a Tamilian couple in their early 60’s with a keen interest in history, travel and the arts. Large windows with a stunning view of the sea, abundant natural light and high ceilings served as the perfect opportunity to design a home with a rich wooden aesthetic that gives a homely yet grand feel.
The home office is an eclectic space where the client is enveloped by artefacts and books, collected along their travels, held within a warm wooden shell with black accents. A customised sliding artwork, the nucleus of the room, is a modern-day interpretation of an Ajanta-Cave painting. A stunning custom full height alabaster totem light, a tall geometric metal screen, a corner Zen Garden are few elements that give the space its unique character. Nestled amongst it all is a calm study unit for the client.
The living room is a showcase of exquisite wooden Indian craftsmanship with the repurposed Chettinad columns mounted on a customised bone inlay crockery unit from Jodhpur being the highlight of the space. Thoughtfully curated teak furniture with intricate carvings combined with cane and brass accents create a warm space that takes you back in time.
The hand painted Ceramic tiles paired with teak-toned shutters lend an earthy, grounded feeling to the Kitchen; perfect for a couple who is passionate about cooking daily delicacies staying true to their roots.
Well thought-out, clutter free “His” & “Her” study rooms each with a distinct identity occupy opposite ends of the home. One has an old world charm with repurposed antique cupboards against the backdrop of a whitewashed brick wall, while the other has a modern sensibility with oak furniture & metal-glass shutters that doubles up as a guest room with its day bed, when needed.
Multiple guest bedrooms, each with distinct personalities, are set-up in the house for the couple to host various family members across the year.
This particular one takes a bold approach of black stained wood combined with the warmth of cane, oak & a magnificent piece of fabric artwork made by local craftsman using Rabari and Sujni hand embroidery techniques.
The home branches out into two other bedrooms, both of which have calm and soothing presence, where pastel hues with traces of wooden finishes and neutral soft furnishings create intimate, peaceful settings enabling the family to give their guests warm private spaces to retire into.
The bathrooms, extensions of the attached bedrooms, take a functional, contemporary approach with storage units and shelves, the finishes of which complement the beautiful marble shell with light fixtures and brass accents bringing in a touch of luxury.
This setting behaves like a time capsule for its inhabitants; one with a rich collection of objects from their diverse travel experiences and reflecting their passion to promote local art, held together within a shell with elements that invoke memories of where they come from and who they are.
